MBO Folder / Perfect Binder Operators

POSITION SUMMARY
Operates the Perfect Binder/Collator under the direction of the Production Supervisor. The operator will perform machine setups, operate the collator/binder, perform quality inspections and package and ship finished product. There are also various maintenance tasks performed by the operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review orders and schedules and assist planning production operations to ensure on time deliveries.

  • Perform setup tasks as required to prepare machine for running order. Examples of setup tasks are adjusting cover feeder, setting pockets on collator, setting glue and scores on binder, adjusting width of pockets on binder, etc.

  • Perform quality inspections at each setup and at regular intervals during the running of each order.

  • Package product, label cartons, place cartons on pallet if required and prepare necessary paperwork to ship order.

  • Complete necessary routing of finished job in computer system and complete and turn in all paperwork for the job.

  • Complete necessary paperwork for daily timekeeping and input data into computer system.

  • Inspects machine and performs or schedules necessary maintenance to ensure machine maintains optimum performance. Examples of operator maintenance are cleaning and oiling machine, maintaining glue unit, etc.

  • Performs housekeeping duties at workstation to ensure area is clean, organized and safe.

  • Other duties may be assigned to this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic math functions, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to read a scale/ruler and work with fractions.

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret basic written instructions. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from co-workers and managers.

  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define basic problems and draw valid conclusions. Ability to make decisions based on facts and information given.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is also required to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch and lift up to 50 pounds.

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Prepress Specialist

Perfection Press, a leading book and commercial printer is seeking an experienced Prepress Specialist. Our Prepress Specialist will be a proactive individual who is knowledgeable in color management, digital production printing, sheet fed printing, prepress functions, and design. This team member must be self-motivated, a creative thinker, problem solver, thorough, organized, and also be able to work collaboratively in a team environment; by keeping others informed and organizing information to help us make the best possible decisions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: This person should have an extensive background in the areas of computers, type, plate making and high-end color scanners, color, halftones, design and typography and printing process as a whole. This person should have knowledge of PC's and Macintosh computers along with all related desktop software such as InDesign, Enfocus Pitstop, Illustrator, Photoshop, the Adobe Suite, Word and other such programs. This person should have knowledge of print rip systems, Rampage or XMF is a plus. This person will be responsible for cross training individuals.

Job Duties:

  • Prepare files for output / proofing.

  • Maintain consistent appearance and standards across projects.

  • Equipment/software troubleshooting

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop and Acrobat

  • Working knowledge with Rampage / XMF system a plus.

  • Working knowledge with Pit Stop or other imposition software a plus.

  • Maintains quality levels and establishes work procedures.

  • Responsible for coordinating with and research and development with the digital printing department / sheet fed printing department and equipment therein.

  • Good understanding of four-color process

  • Good understanding of full color digital printing.

  • Actively and routinely communicate with team and customers to resolve issues before they arise.

  • Interact with all other departments as needed via face-to-face communication, phone, email, meetings, etc.

  • Ability to use and understand business computer programs including the ability to produce required reports.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze and use customer supplied disks for purpose of production, preflight and estimating.

  • Read, understand and implement customer specifications.

  • Contact and discuss issues with customers/employees.

  • Produce projects from scratch utilizing page layout, drawing and photo manipulation software.

  • Prepare files for printing to specified output device.

  • Understand all digital equipment and be able to operate to obtain proofs, etc.

  • Able to operate and understand variable data process and software as well as an understanding of database software/functions.

  • Understand and use wide format devices.

  • Troubleshoot basic computer problems as well as load/unload software both on Mac & PC.

  • Logical and accurate file management.

  • Calibrate and maintain prepress hardware as needed.

  • Maintain accurate billing & time records.

  • Train others when necessary.

  • USEFUL, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of Core1Draw, PowerPoint, digital photography, web design, color management systems

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrate eye/hand coordination.

  • Need to be able to differentiate between colors.

  • Able to work on computer for up to an 8-hour period.

  • Willing to work overtime as required on short notice.
